Zipcar is an American car-sharing subsidiary that serves over 900,000 members and rents nearly 10,000 different vehicles in the United States. Zipcar provides “Wheels When You Want Them”, allowing paying members the ability to instantly reserve vehicle rentals for either hours or days at a time.
Founded in 2000 by Antje Danielson and Robin Chase, the two created the company with technological advancement and design at the forefront of their seasoned platform. Chase is also the CEO and founder of several other successful car-sharing companies currently operating in the United States. In 2009, Chase was listed as one of Time’s most influential people, and is also the recipient of awards from numerous national, state, and local environmental government organizations for her entrepreneurship.
The first Zipcar appeared on the road in June of 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. In the years to follow, Zipcar would open their first offices in Washington D.C. and New York City during the years 2001 and 2002. In 2005, the company opened an office in San Francisco. In the consecutive years thereafter, Zipcar would open several more offices worldwide, in locations such as Toronto (2006), London (2006), and even Vancouver (2007).
Shortly after the Vancouver office was opened in 2007, Zipcar merged with a similar company known as Flexcar. Although some of the company executives changed, along with their NASDAQ title, the Zipcar brand and headquarters remained the same, even doubling its profit in the year that followed.
