Philips is a Dutch technology company founded in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik Philips, who was a banker and the man who ultimately financed the company in its genesis, which included its first factory. Today, the first Philips factory stands as a popularly visited historical museum. Before recruiting Anton into the family business, Gerard’s younger brother of 16 years, The Philips Company endured several hard years plagued by imminent threats of bankruptcy and failure.

Originally drafted as a customer service representative despite holding a degree in engineering, the brightness and keen innovation lurking within many of Anton’s ideas quickly sculpted him into becoming a crucial proprietor of the company. The father-and-son trio quickly steered the company into the greatness which allowed it to expand, beginning with the Philips Metal Filament Lamp Factory in 1908 and the Philips Lightbulb Factories Ltd in 1912. Around this time, the Philips brothers laid down the groundwork which soon thereafter would change their family business into what is known as today, the Philips Corporation.

Philips was responsible for the invention of countless electronic devises, tools, and even shavers, all of which are still around today. In 1949 the company began this outreach of product by introducing its first television set. A year later, Philips Records was formed in 1950. In 1963, the Philips Company released another extremely successful product, audio-cassettes that were also portable radios. Then, less than ten years later Philips released the world’s first video cassette recorder.

Philips would eventually team with Sony to release the first known compact disc (CD). Today, Philips has taken a leading interest in healthcare technologies, focusing on combining its innovative styles with the world of medicine and science.
